I thought that you would like to know that my wife and I (and a friend for some of the way) actually managed to complete the off-road ‘Blue Cross’ marathon of 500 km last week, to raise funds for the S.P.C.A. and as a personal challenge.  It was a stunning adventure of over two weeks of hard walking but loads of fun and laughter.  Our days commenced with many an early start (3.30 or 4 a.m.) to drive to our start for the day, stopping walking by about 3 p.m. and in bed asleep by 8 p.m.!

We started in the bed of the Save River, near Mahenye (in the south-east of Zimbabwe) on 27th July:IMG_0147[9]

We walked 30 – 35 km each day, and we had five fantastic bases which we travelled to each evening as we were not up to walking all day, and then camping on the side of the trail each evening.  This meant a lot of driving, but our Land Rover (which you will know from your transfers to and from the airport!) did us proud, only getting firmly stuck in a river bed once.  The off-road route consisted of dirt roads or tracks, some of them very stony / rocky and the majority of them with dust as fine as talcum powder, which was really hard work!
